The Klukhor Pass is a mountain pass through the Main Caucasian Range, located at an altitude of 2,781 meters above sea level.
Archaeological research indicates that regular connections through the Klukhor Pass existed as early as the III millennium BC.
In the antique era (V-IV centuries BC), the importance of this route increased significantly, and during the Migration Period (IV-VII centuries AD), it became one of the most vital thoroughfares connecting Byzantium with Central Asia, bypassing the Caspian Sea.
The strategic importance of the pass persisted until the mid-XX century.
In 1894, construction began on the Sukhumi Military Road, which connected Karachayevsk with the coastal city of Sukhumi.
The route ran through the Klukhor Pass and remained in operation until 1946.
