The Cross Pass runs through the Main Caucasus Range at an elevation of 2,379 metres in Kazbegi Municipality, between Gudauri and Kobi.
It is the highest point on the Georgian Military Road.
The pass received its name in 1824, when General Alexander Petrovich Yermolov (1777–1861) ordered a stone cross to be erected there.
Today this monument stands off to the side of the modern highway: in 1863 that section of the road was rebuilt and shifted relative to the historical route.
