Mayorsha Rock is located near the Jvari Pass, the highest point of the Georgian Military Highway (2,379 km above sea level).
This section of the road is the most prone to avalanches.
Because of this, wooden galleries have been built here since the XIX century.
Each gallery was named after someone who died there.
The gallery and the neighbouring Mayorsha Rock were named after a certain major’s wife who, after a disagreement with her maid, kicked her out of her carriage and forced her to walk.
An avalanche occurred along this stretch of road, burying the major’s wife and her carriage, but the girl survived and safely navigated the dangerous stretch.
By the XX century, the galleries gradually lost their proper names: the name “Mayorsha Rock” has not survived to this day.
