The Sioni Tower is located in the village of the same name in the Khevi region on the Georgian Military Highway.
In the code of laws issued by George V the Brilliant (1286-1346), the region around the village of Sioni is referred to as the “Sionian eristavi [duchy],” indicating that Sioni was already the center of an independent feudal state at that time.
In the XVII century, even after the weakening of royal authority and the spread of the influence of the Aragvi eristavis to Khevi, such officials continued to be called “eristavs of Sioni.”
A church dating from the IX-X centuries, has been preserved to this day.
The basilica is shaped like a square of 10.2 by 12.1 meters, its walls completely flat, without any decoration.
The defensive tower, also surviving to this day, was built somewhat later, in the XII-XIII centuries.
