Tiflis. Saint David monastery

Saunt David’s Monastery is a church of the Georgian Orthodox Church in Tbilisi, located on Mtatsminda mount.

The present church was built between 1859 and 1871 and consecrated in honour of David Garedji

(according to еру legend, the ascetic settled here in the VI century).

In 1891, a parish school was opened at the monastery.

A spring emerging from the mountain near the monastery is considered to have healing properties and to help with infertility.

The northern wall of the monastery is covered with small stones attached by worshippers as prayers for wishes to be fulfilled.

The necropolis at the monastery, officially opened in 1929, was declared the Mtatsminda Pantheon.

Many prominent figures of Georgia are buried here, including well-known writers, actors, scholars, and national heroes.

One of the most notable graves is that of Alexander Griboyedov (1795–1829).
