In XIX century Russia the word ‘boundary’, referred to any memorable landmarks and boundary markers — from ravines and swamps to notable trees.
St. Nicholas’ Boundary was located on the Military Ossetian Road, at the confluence of the Tseydon and Kasar gorges.
The landmark was a roadside shelter where travelers could catch their breath and refresh themselves after a long journey (lodgings and a single meal cost from 1 to 1.5 roubles per night).
In the late XIX century, the 100 kilometer route from Vladikavkaz to Tsey was covered on horseback in two days, and such shelters provided a much-needed stopping place.
