George bridge across Kara-Kuysu

George Bridge was located on the Kara-Koisu river in Dagestan.

Originally built with wood, the bridge was called Saltynsky Bridge (named for a nearby hamlet, Salta).

In 1867 it was replaced with an iron one.

The new bridge was named George Bridge, in honour of Grand Duke George Mikhailovich Romanov (1863-1919).

On August 29th 1877, the bridge was captured by local mountaineers as part of an anti-Tsarist insurrection.

After fortifying the bridge, they successfuly repelled an attack by the 83rd Samurskiy regiment.

Unfortunately, the bridge was demolished in the second half of the XX century during the construction of the Gunib hydro-electric power plant.
