Archaeological finds in the vicinity of Balta indicate that this area was inhabited since the beginning of the Bronze Age (which lasted approximately from 3700 BC to 400 AD in the Caucasus). When itvwas part of Alania (9th-13th centuries), Balta became a significant hub in the trade between the Byzantine Empire and Persia, as it was situated at the intersection of important trade routes leading to these countries. The city continued its development until the 19th century. Foreign travelers were very impressed by Georgian Military Road (its construction was completed in 1817), especially compared to other roads of the Empire, (according to James Bryce, a liberal politician, 1838-1928).
