Kutaisi. Market square near cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Kutaisi was located on the city’s central square (now David the Builder Square).

Construction of the cathedral began in 1852 and was completed in 1871.

The church was painted by the famous artist Grigory Gagarin (1810–1893), who also restored frescoes in the Tbilisi Sioni Cathedral, the Betania Monastery, and other Georgian churches.

The consecration of the cathedral was performed by Bishop Gabriel Kikodze (1825–1896).

Buried on the cathedral grounds were Metropolitan of the Kutaisi-Gaenati Eparchy Antonii Giorgadze (1866–1918) and Bishop of Imereti Bessarion Dadiani (1832–1900).

Along with clergy, cadets who died in battles for Tbilisi in February 1921 were also interred here.

That same year, the Bolsheviks entered Georgia, and three years later the cathedral was demolished.

What became of the burials on the cathedral grounds remains unknown.
