Zhoekvara gorge

The Zhoekvara gorge begins in the western part of the city of Gagra, near the Abaata Fortress.

About a kilometer from the fortress, the remains of a watchtower built in 1841 have been preserved.

Later, it was named the Marlinskiy Tower in honor of the writer and Decembrist Alexander Bestuzhev (whose pseudonym was Marlinskiy).

Konstantin Danzas, a friend of Alexander Pushkin, participated in the construction of the tower.

Danzas later became the poet’s second in his fateful duel in 1837.

On the Zhoekvara River, the Gagra Hydroelectric Power Plant, built in 1903 to provide electricity for the city’s needs, has also been preserved.
