Tiflis. Selling vegetables on Maidan

Maidan is the historical name of the oldest square in Tbilisi.

The square is located on the bank of the Kura River.

The name likely comes from the Turkic language, where it means “square” or “arena.”

The history of the square dates back to the Middle Ages, when a marketplace emerged in front of the Narikala fortress, at the intersection of trade routes.

Caravans entered the city from the east through the Ganja Gate, passed through Maidan, and then continued north, leaving the city through the Kodjori or the Mukhrani Gates.

One of the earliest documented names for the square is Tsikhis Moedani (Fortress Square), as it was located near the fortress wall.

It appears under this name on the map compiled by Vakhushti Bagrationi in 1735.
