The Church of David is located on Mount Mtatsminda, in the southwestern part of Tbilisi.
The monastery was founded in the VI century when David Gareji, one of the thirteen Syrian fathers who brought Christianity to Georgia, arrived in the region.
According to tradition, the saint lived in a small cave at this site, where a church was later erected in his honor.
The church was repeatedly destroyed, with new churches built on the same site from the X to the XIX centuries.
In 1810, the Church of the Transfiguration was built in place of the old church of the ruined monastery.
The wide and winding road leading to it was cut in 1817 under the supervision of General Yermolov.
The monastery took its modern form in 1859, and its dome was installed in 1879.
The brick church follows the traditional cross-in-square design, yet its interior space is unified and indivisible.
The church has entrances on two sides: from the west and from the south.
Nearby stands a two-story bell tower with a golden mosaic cross, which functions as a separate church.
