The history of the central railway station in Tbilisi begins in the distant year of 1872, when the first station building was completed.
It had two terminals — the Central and the Borjomi.
The first train departed from the new station to Poti on October 10, 1872.
Unfortunately, that building has not survived — it was demolished in 1952.
In its place, a new building in the Stalinist Empire style was erected. The second station building stood for 30 years.
In 1982 it was slated for demolition, but the foundation proved so solid that the station had to be blown up.
The current brutalist-style station began construction immediately after the demolition, but with the collapse of the USSR, the building remained unfinished — the interior was not completed until 2008.
