Kakheti is the easternmost region of Georgia.
The area under vineyards amounts to 77,500 hectares — 54% of the country’s total.
According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, the region produces 80% of Georgia’s wine.
Kakheti still uses an ancient method of wine fermentation – in large clay vessels called qvevri.
Most Kakhetian wineries use this method, it was included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013.
