Avchalskaya Street bore this name until 1850.
It was located in the Avlabari district of Tbilisi and received its name from the nearby settlement of Avchala.
By 1903, when this postcard was issued, the street was already named ‘Cherkezovskaya’ in honour of Grand Prince Georgy Ivanovich Cherkezov (1782–1856).
He came from the influential Georgian house of Chkheidze but changed his surname after his father’s death in Circassia (Cherkesia).
Georgy Ivanovich rose to the rank of Major-General and was a member of the Tiflis city administration.
Today, the street bears the name of Saint Tsotne Dadiani, ruling Prince of Mingrelia (died in 1260).
