The “Agudzery” sanatorium in Sukhumi was built by Prince Nikolai Nikolaevich Smetsky (1852–1931) in 1905.
The design of the sanatorium was created by the well-known Sukhumi architect and engineer Alexander Vasilievich Sinitsyn.
The model for the “Agudzery” sanatorium was the “Hohenhoffen” sanatorium, a German Rhine resort.
The two-story sanatorium building was designed to accommodate 100 guests.
Surrounding the sanatorium was a decorative park covering 33 desyatinas (approximately 36 hectares).
Smetsky had originally established the botanical park in 1895.
In 1910, a 15-meter observation tower with a viewing platform was built near the sanatorium on the seashore.
Smetsky constructed the tower for his wife, who suffered from tuberculosis.
Every morning at 8:00 AM, the landowner’s wife, Olga Yuryevna, was taken to the sea, where she climbed the tower and spent exactly one hour breathing the sea air.
