The exact origin of the name of the Teberda River is unknown. According to one version, it comes from the phrase “tab jerdy,” which means “convenient place” in Karachay. There is also another interpretation: the origin of the name is found in the words “teyri berdi,” which in Karachay means “gift of God” (literally, “God gave”). The river is mainly fed by glaciers, of which there are about a hundred in the Teberda basin. They provide 55% of the river’s water flow. In addition, Teberda is replenished by mineral springs. The Teberda River originates at the confluence of two mountain rivers, Amanauz and Gonachkhir, on the northern slopes of the Caucasus Range, and ends by flowing into the Kuban River near the city of Karachaevsk. The length of the Teberda River is about 60 kilometers.
