The height of the Sukhumi lighthouse is 37 meters.
It was designed by engineer Ernest Goüin, one of the creators of the Eiffel Tower, commissioned by the Navigation Department of the Imperial Russian Navy.
In 1861, lighthouse was brought to its location in a disassembled state from France.
Its tower is made of steel sheets and was assembled during 150 days.
All construction stands on special screw cast-iron piles that extend nearly twenty meters deep into the bedrock.
The structure is supported by a circular steel platform.
Originally, Sukhumi lighthouse was equipped with a simple oil lamp.
However, during strong winds, the lighthouse would sway, causing a significant amount of oil to spill.
To solve this problem, a special system of cables was installed, which still encircles the lighthouse today, preventing it from swaying in any wether conditions.
