Kulyebyakinskaya street appeared in Sukhumi in the 1830-th, and in the 1850-th, it received its name.
Earlier local people called it Central (or Main) street, as most government institutions were located there.
Despite the fact that the street is sometimes referred to as “Kolyubyakinskaya,” the more accurate name is “Kolyubakinskaya,” was named in honor of Nikolai Petrovich Kolyubakin (1810–1868).
Nikolai Petrovich began his military career in 1830.
In 1834, he was transferred to the Caucasus, where he was wounded.
While recovering in Stavropol, he met Mikhail Lermontov in 1837.
According to some literary scholars, Kolyubakin served as the prototype for Grushnitsky in Lermontov’s novel A Hero of Our Time.
From 1860 to 1863, Kolyubakin served as the governor of Kutaisi.
During his tenure, he allowed the reburial of Prince Konstantin Dadeshkeliani of Svaneti in 1862, for which he was dismissed and appointed senator in Moscow.
