Rioni river. Bishops mountain

Bishops Mountain is the unofficial name of Mount Khvamli.

It is located 70 kilometers north of Kutaisi and rises 2,000 meters above sea level.

A stone chapel still stands on its summit, where every year, on the 40th day after Easter, the festival of Khvamloba is celebrated.

Mount Khvamli appears in ancient Georgian epic poetry—it was here that the hero Amirani, who stole fire from the gods, was chained.

Khvamli is also mentioned in historical chronicles.

According to the chronicle The Life of Kartli, during the Mongol invasion of Georgia, royal treasures were hidden in the mountain caves of Khvamli.

Although these treasures have never been found, numerous archaeological artifacts have been discovered on the mountain.

In one of the caves, red-painted images dating back to the High Middle Ages (XI-XIV centuries) have survived.

In addition, the slopes of the mountain still preserve the remains of ancient settlements.

Finally, the discovery of an ancient anchor and fossilized seashells suggests that a sea once washed over the area where the mountain now stands.
