Mikhaylovskaya Embankment (now divided into Makhadzhir Embankment and Dioscuri Embankment) is the oldest street in Sukhumi, first mentioned in 1810.
The Sukhumi embankment began at the gates of the fortress and ended at the Basla River.
In 1864, the embankment was named after Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov (1832–1909), the imperial governor of the Caucasus at the time.
After being completely destroyed during the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–1878, the city began to revive from the embankment.
At the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX centuries, many architectural landmarks that have survived to this day appeared on Mikhaylovskaya Embankment, including the Russia Hotel (1898), the Oriental Hotel (1908), and the three-story San Remo Hotel (now Ritsa, 1914).
