Lake Kara-Kol’ is located within the Teberda Nature Reserve in Karachay-Cherkessia. It was formed about 10,000 years ago after the powerful Teberda Glacier retreated from the valley. The name Kara-Kol’ is literally translated from Karachay as “Black Lake.” The Kuzovlev Dacha, located near its shores, is the oldest building in Teberda. It was built by Mikhail Fedorovich Kuzovlev in 1883 for his wife, who was suffering from tuberculosis.
