The White Bridge is located in the old part of Kutaisi and connected two banks of the Rioni River.
Building of the original White Bridge was started in 1850 by military engineer Witte.
Construction was completed in 1852, but the bridge collapsed just eight years later.
After an unsuccessful attempt to restore it, the decision was made to build a new bridge.
In 1870, engineer Zesman took on the project.
The new White Bridge was manufactured at the same factory that produced the components for the Eiffel Tower – the people of Kutaisi often proudly refer to the White Bridge as the French or Parisian Bridge.
It was assembled in Kutaisi and opened in 1872.
