Kutaisi. Rioni river chain bridge. Winter view

The Chain Bridge in the city of Kutaisi is located on Saint Nino Street.

The next bridge upstream is the equally famous Red Bridge.

The Chain Bridge is the oldest bridge in the city — the current stone piers were built in 1770 (although at that time the bridge itself was wooden).

The chains supporting the wooden parts of the bridge were added only in the mid-XIX century.

In 1869, the bridge was damaged as a result of a traffic accident and was restored with city funds in 1884–1885.

The metal parts were manufactured by the English firm Garner Engineering, which is why the bridge is sometimes called the Royal Bridge.
