Kutaisi. Red bridge

The Red bridge in Kutaisi was built between 1860 and 1862, making it the first metal bridge in the Caucasus and the oldest bridge in the city.

The history of the Red bridge begins on June 19, 1859, when Captain Boleslav Statkovsky presented a design for a single-span metal bridge over the Rioni river.

The cost of this bridge was 65,851 rubles.

Although this project was approved, a different one was ultimately chosen for construction.

The manufacture of the metal parts for the bridge was commissioned to the Paris-based trading house Cayl & Co.

Construction began on June 24, 1860, and the bridge was opened to traffic on May 15, 1862.
