Kutaisi. Bishops mountain

Bishops Mountain (also known as Mount Khvamli) located 70 kilometers north of Kutaisi.

The mountain is notable for being mentioned in historical sources — during the Tatar-Mongol invasion, royal treasures were hidden in its caves.

According to The Georgian Chronicles, in 1263 David VI Narin (1225-1293) and David VII Ulu (1215-1270) “decided to divide the kingdom and the treasury in two… …and they divided the realm and the riches, except for those kept in the cave of Khvamli.

From there they took a small portion, which they also shared between themselves, but left the rest untouched in the cave.

The golden chain called Salmasuri, the precious gemstone Gvrdemli, and a huge pearl, the likes of which no one had ever seen—all three of these treasures went to Rusudan’s son, David (Ulu).”
