Kurush

The mountain village of Kurush is located in southern Dagestan. It is situated on the slope of Mount Shalbuzdag, which reaches an elevation of 4,142 meters above sea level. The elevation of Kurush varies from 2,480 to 2,560 meters (topographic maps show the center of the village at an elevation of about 2,530 meters). This is the highest permanently inhabited settlement not only in the Caucasus but also in Europe. The population of the village mainly consists of Lezgins, whose primary occupation is herding.
