Kart-Dzhurt is located in the Karachayevsky district of the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic in Russia.
The aul (village) is situated on the right bank of the Kuban river, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level.
The name “Kart-Dzhurt” translates from Karachay as “Old Settlement.”
Until the end of the XIX century, it was one of the main political centers of Greater Karachay.
According to legends, it was in Kart-Dzhurt that the legendary leader of the Karachays, Karcha, settled after the long wanderings of his people.
Here was the Elbergen — a place for public assemblies where the most important matters of war, peace, and justice were decided.
The aul was also home to many influential nobles and princely families (beys).
