Kaishauri Valley

The Kaishauri Valley is a very beautiful valley of the White Aragvi on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Range. It has long been inhabited by highlanders who engaged in cattle breeding, and where the soil allowed, in agriculture.

Ruins of ancient buildings still remain there, some of which were described by Lermontov in his poem “Demon”:

On the slope of a rocky mountain

Above the Kaishauri Valley

Still stand to this day

The jagged remnants of an ancient ruin.

The plot of the novel “A Hero of Our Time” begins in the Koishaurskaya Valley. There, the narrator hires oxen to transport his belongings up the Kaishauri Mountain. Until 1863, the Military Georgian Road passed through the Kaishauri Valley.
