The Dudarov Tower stands in the Darial Gorge, near the village of Lars.
It is built from well-fitted river stones and sandstone using a lime mortar.
The Ossetian princes of the Dudarov family constructed the tower in the Middle Ages to protect their lands and the trade routes that passed through them.
At the beginning of the XIX century, the Georgian Military Road was modernized to facilitate safer and more convenient caravan travel.
Lars played an important role in this project.
In a letter to Emperor Alexander I, Makhamat Dudarov ceded his personally owned “village of Lars… with all its buildings and all property belonging to the village… including land, forests, mills, and everything within the village’s boundaries” for military fortification.
Until the end of the XIX century, an infantry company and two mortars were stationed in the tower.
