Caucasus. Sukhumi hunters rest

This postcard depicts hunters and their pack horses, one of which is carrying the carcass of a killed deer with sprawling antlers.

At that time, hunting in the Caucasus had a dual significance – it was both a means of sustenance and an important tradition.

For many residents of the mountainous regions, hunting was a part of their pastoral and nomadic way of life.

It demanded physical strength, knowledge of the terrain, endurance, and bravery.

The ability to track an animal in the mountains, navigate by sounds and tracks, and survive in bad weather was considered a display of true courage.
