Caucasian Gate

The Caucasian Gate is the old name for the Darial Gorge. Since ancient times, the gorge was the only route from Transcaucasia to the north, known as the Darial Pass. Today, this section of the road is part of the Georgian Military Highway. The beauty of the Darial Gorge has inspired admiration from travelers for many centuries. Its literary description can be found in “A Journey to Arzrum” by A. S. Pushkin (1829), and in the poems “The Demon” (1839) and “Tamara” (1841) by M. Y. Lermontov. The beauty of these places was also celebrated by renowned artists: I. K. Aivazovsky in “Darial Gorge” (1891), A. I. Kuindzhi in “Darial Gorge. Moonlit Night” (1895), and P. P. Vereshchagin in “Darial Gorge” (1886).
