Adolf Alexandrovich Remmert (1835–1902) was born in Saint Petersburg into the family of pharmacist Alexander Ivanovich Remmert.

In 1853 he enrolled at the Saint Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy—the Russian Empire’s premier institution for training physicians, completed his studies in 1858 and defended his dissertation there in 1872.

In 1867 Remmert became the physician to the children of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich, the Tsar’s viceroy in the Caucasus.

Like many doctors who served in the region, Adolf Alexandrovich began studying the region’s therapeutic mineral waters.

On June 16, 1867, he gave a presentation to the Caucasian Medical Society on the climate and mineral waters of Borjomi.

Another of Remmert’s accomplishments was the bottling and nationwide distribution of Borjomi water.

The results were impressive: while only 5,350 bottles were sold in 1890, by 1905 that number had risen to 2,382,741.
