Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich Romanov became the Tsar’s viceroy in the Caucasus in 1862 and chose Borjomi—whose beauty had captivated him—as his summer residence.
The Borjomi estate of Mikhail Nikolayevich covered 69,513 desyatinas (approximately 76,000 hectares).
A two-story wooden palace in the Moorish style was built in Borjomi for the Grand Duke.
In 1871, Emperor Alexander II himself visited the estate as a guest.
