Borjomi. Petres Tsikhe ruins

The Peteres Tsikhe fortress is an old, partially ruined stronghold perched on a high cliff in the Borjomi Gorge, opposite the Romanov Palace in Likani.

The fortress is built from large river pebbles. Apparently, such an unusual building material was used because it was literally “at hand” —the fortress stands right above the banks of the Kura river.

The structure consisted of a citadel and a lower courtyard connected to it. The exact date of the fortress’s construction is unknown.

At one time, it belonged to the Avalishvili princes and controlled access to the gorge.

In the late XVI century, the fortress was captured by the Turks, who established a Turkish administrative center and garrison there.

In addition to the upper and lower tiers, two large basins have survived on the site, which were presumably used as water and grain storage.
